Facility Master Plan

The facility master plan helps you plan the right services consistent with your mission, strategic initiatives, and market; at the right size based on projected demand, staffing, and equipment/technology; in the right location based on access, operational efficiency, and building suitability; with the right financial structure (e.g., own, lease, partner, etc.)

The facility master plan also serves as a “road map” to guide facility investments over a multi-year period. We can help you reconfigure existing facilities as well as plan new facilities. We can also provide a “second opinion” regarding projects already in the planning stage and perform financial feasibility and return on investment analyses.

We begin by collecting baseline data on market dynamics, workload trends, current space allocation, and perceived facility, operational, and technology issues. We then review your current market strategies and business plans (as available), potential operations restructuring initiatives, and planned investments in new medical equipment, information technology, and other capital requirements (e.g., infrastructure upgrading). We gather input from hospital leadership using individual interviews, focus groups, and data collection questionnaires. Then we project present and future space needs and compare them with current space allocation.

We help you reach consensus on investment priorities and development of a long-range reconfiguration strategy, which is translated into a detailed phasing/implementation plan. This “road map” identifies immediate, short-term, and long-range “projects” with corresponding capital requirements and sequencing over a multi-year period.

The facility master plan includes the following deliverables:

  • Future bed need and ancillary workload projections
  • Long-range nursing unit configuration and ambulatory service configuration plans
  • Comparison of existing and future space need with current space allocation
  • Summary of current facility, operational, and technology issues
  • Long-range facility development strategy and proposed facility reconfiguration drawings
  • Detailed phasing/implementation plan

The Chi Group has assisted over 500 health care institutions with facility planning over the past 30 years. Some of those benefits are:

  • Savings of millions of dollars in unnecessary renovation or construction
  • Enhancing the operational efficiency of new or renovated facilities, rather than simply replicating current inefficient operations in newer, code-compliant facilities
  • Incorporating new medical technology, information technology, and evolving e-health initiatives into the planning of the “digital hospital”
  • Balancing the trade-offs between investments in facilities, new medical equipment, hardware/software, and new business ventures through a multidisciplinary, integrated planning effort
